Am I missing something here?

So after reading all of the crazy great reviews I decided to try it out for myself. Played for the last 2 days on and off and am
completely underwhelmed. You smack a creature, you dash you cast a spell over and over and over again. No variation, item pick ups dont have any real impact on anything, story is linear. Wth!?
